The journal was originally titled "Natural Enemies of Insects" and was founded in 1979 by the renowned Chinese entomologist and Academician PU Zhelong. It was officially renamed to "Journal of Environmental Entomology" in 2008. It is published bimonthly, on the 5th day of every odd month, with postal subscription code 46-18 and a price of CNY 98 per issue.
The journal is included in the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) and A Guide to the Core Journal of China, and has been selected as a Key Magazine of China Technology. It is also indexed by foreign databases such as Database of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Zoological Record (ZR), and CAB Abstracts of CABI.
