| Eretmocerus hayati is an obligate parasitoid of Bemisia tabaci, but it cannot successfully parasitize Trialeurodes vaporariorum. To clarify the parasitic behavior of E. hayati on the MED biotype of B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum, this study determined the parasitic behavior of E. hayati on the second-instar nymphs of the mediterranean cryptic species (MED) biotype of B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum through ethological observations under both choice and no-choice conditions. The results showed that E. hayati displayed oviposition behavior on both B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum, but it had distinct preferences for the oviposition sites. Specifically, it deposited eggs on the thorax of T. vaporariorum, while targeting the abdomen of B. tabaci. The parasitic behaviors of E. hayati on the two whitefly species mainly include antennae tapping, ovipositor probing and oviposition, hind leg tapping for marking, and host-feeding. Among them, the number of probing and parasitization events on B. tabaci was significantly higher than those on T. vaporariorum. The parasitization time (210.1 s) and feeding time (354.1 s) on T. vaporariorum were significantly longer than the parasitization time (198.6 s) and feeding time (290.3 s) on B. tabaci. Meanwhile, the E. hayati also showed a significant preference for the parasitic behaviors on B. tabaci and a significant preference for the feeding behavior on T. vaporariorum under choice bioassay. The above research results provide a basis for the further efficient utilization of E. hayati in the control of whitefly pests. |
