Simulium larvae are a cleaner and a pollution indicator of the water quality in natural river system. In this study, the anti-HRP antibody and phalloidin were used to mark the peripheral nerves of ventral nerve cord and muscles and showed the structure of abdominal neuromuscular junctions in the larvae of Simulium xingyiense by immunofluorescence. The ventral nerve cord consisted of eleven pairs of ganglia in larvae. Each pair of ganglia was formed by two coalesced masses of neurosomes, and the distribution pattern of nucleus was a headless and tailless Φ shape. The lateral nerves and longitudinal nerves were connected on both sides of AG1~AG5 and the connection structure looked like a trapezoidal shape. The abdominal muscles were divided into three types, namely transverse, longitudinal, and oblique. The transverse nerve extended into the abdominal longitudinal muscles on both sides of ganglion, and the nerve endings separates from it were formed a bead-like bulging terminal boutons structure. The structure basis of neuromuscular junctions might be related to the pattern of twisting and feeding of S. xingyiense larvae. In this paper, we described the fine structural basis of the ventral nerve cord and abdominal neuromuscular junctions in the larvae of S. xingyiense. |
