In order to understand the effect of host plants and chemicals on the behavioral response of the bean flower thrips, Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall), in this study, the tropistic responses of adults female M. usitatusto eleven chemicals with different concentrations were measured using a Y-tube olfactometer in the laboratory. The results showed that cowpea flower, ethyl nicotinate with the concentration of 10-4, 10-6, nerol with the concentration of 10-2, linalool with the concentration of 10-2, orthoanisic aldehyde with the concentration of 10-6 and 3-benzenepropanal with the concentration of 10-2, 10-4 exhibited extremely significant attractive effect, kidney bean flower and nerol with the concentration of 10-4 exhibited significant attractive effect, whereas beta citronellol with the concentration of 10-4, 10-6 and benzaldehyde with the concentration of 10-6 exhibited significant repellent effect. From these results, it’s not difficulty to understand that different concentrations of the same chemical were significantly influenced the attractiveness to M. usitatus. The results of this experiment will facilitate the further study and practical application the chemicals to monitor and control thrips in the field. |
