Cheilomenes sexmaculata Fabricius is one of the common predatory natural enemies in southern China, feeding on a variety of agricultural and forestry pests. In order to clarify the effects of C. sexmaculata feeding on Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, rearing on Rhopalosiphum maidis Fitch as a control treatment, the development, reproduction and predation preference of C. sexmaculata feeding on P. solenopsis were studied in two consecutive generations. The results showed that C. sexmaculata feeding on P. solenopsis developed significantly slower than on R. maidis, with 15.43 and 14.38 d for the F1 and F2 mealybug-feeding generations, respectively. Newly-emerged adult weight of C. sexmaculata feeding on P. solenopsis increased significantly, with 8.95 and 8.59 mg in the F1 and F2 mealybug-feeding generation, respectively. There were no significant differences in total survival and fecundity when fed on mealybugs, with 62.92% and 60.00% survival, and 597.80 and 533.90 eggs laid in F1 and F2 generations, respectively. The prey selectivity index D of adult C. sexmaculata in F1, F2 mealybug-feeding groups and aphid-feeding group were all greater than 1, indicating that the adult C. sexmaculata showed a predatory preference for R. maidis. The results indicate that C. sexmaculata is well adapted to P. solenopsis within 2 generations and that the mealybug can be included in the biological control range of C. sexmaculata.
