In order to explore biochemical mechanism of short-term adaptation of digestive enzymes in Frankliniella occidentalis to different foods, three foods of rose petal, rose flower (containing pollen and nectar)and 10% honey solution+kidney bean pod were used to feed female adults of F. occidentalis. The differences in the activities of digestive enzymes (α-amylase, trypsin and chymotrypsin)were compared after feeding the various foods at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and 48 h, respectively. The results showed that the activities of α-amylase and trypsin were the highest in feeding rose flower at any time, and they were the lowest in thrips feeding rose petal at most time. The activity of α-amylase in thrips feeding rose petal firstly decreased and then increased with time extension, while it firstly rose to the higher level and then dropped when thrips fed other two foods. The activities of chymotrypsin were lowest when thrips fed rose flower at 3~6 h, and which hadn't obvious regularity at other time. The results of the study indicated that F. occidentalis could rapidly adjust the activities of digestive enzyme, to adapt different foods and achieve sufficient nutrients for growth and development.
