In a eusocial bee colony with a single queen, the only fertile female one who lays fertilized and unfertilized egg to breed population. A fertile queen is necessarily linked to colony fitness. The mature virgin queen only mates during a very brief period to acquire and store a lifetime supply of sperm. As sperm cannot be replenished, the polyandrous queen must keep the stored sperm viable in the spermatheca for several years. However, certain aspects of the physiological roles remain largely unclear and further studies are required to address it. This article reviewed the accumulated evidences of morphology, reproductive physiology, sperm motility factors and micro environment of spermatheca support on the sperm long term storage, to provide the systematic understanding of honeybee resources evaluation, protection and utilization, as well as the pest control strategies.
