Insect migration is an extraordinarily spectacular and enigmatic phenomenon in nature, yet migratory pests pose the greatest threat to China's food security. During the 1960s to 1980s, the fundamental patterns of migration were deciphered in major crop pests such as armyworms, planthoppers, and rice leaf rollers, laying the theoretical groundwork for remote forecasting and regional management of migratory pests. From the late 1980s to the early 21st century, the advent of entomological radar revealed aerial behaviors such as common orientation and layer formation. Through three decades of pioneering efforts and persistence, followed by another three decades of advancements, the rapid development of technologies such as entomological radar, molecular biological techniques, and artificial intelligence has led to significant progress in recent years in understanding the population outbreak mechanisms, molecular mechanisms of physiological regulation, and mechanism underlying orientation and navigation behaviors in migratory insect pests. The future has arrived, and China's research on insect migration has embarked on a new thirty-year journey. With momentum building, even a thousand miles no longer seem distant.

Under global climate change, the occurrence, outbreak and the related mechanisms of agricultural insect pests are increasingly complex and changeable, posing a serious threat to agricultural production. Traditional monitoring and early warning methods are difficult to meet the needs of precision management of insect pests in modern agriculture due to their low efficiency and poor accuracy. Recently many studies were carried out and indicated that the monitoring and early warning technologies of agricultural insect pests, such as the mornitoring technologies of light trapping, sex-hormone trapping and food traping (e.g. pest monitoring light, remote sex-hormone monitoring system etc.), have been rapidly developed based on the phototaxis, chemotaxis and sitotaxis (collectively termed the “three tropisms”) of insect pests. These technologies, combined with automatic counting, intelligent identification and the Internet of Things (IoT), have facilitated the construction of intelligent monitoring and early warning systems. This paper reviewed the mechanism of three main monitoring and early warning technologies of insect pests based on their “three tropisms” (i.e., light trapping, sex-hormone trapping, and food trapping), as well as the development status and application prospect of intelligent monitoring and early warning technologies of insect pests, and pointed out the significant advantages of these technologies in improving the monitoring efficiency and prediction accuracy of insect pests. It also analyzed the existing problems and challenges in the application of these technologies (e.g., susceptibility to the environment, and involvement of multiple specialized disciplines and shortage of relevant professionals). In the future, it is necessary to integrate multi-source data and intelligent Al model to further optimize monitoring technologies and build intelligent monitoring and early warning platforms for insect pests in order to ensure agricultural production safety and promote sustainable development of agriculture.

http://hjkcxb.alljournals.net/hjkcxben/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202601003&flag=1

【Aim】The rice-growing region in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River is a serious perennial outbreak area of the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) in China. As a typical mobile frontal system, temperate cyclones traverse over ten degrees of longitude, frequently causing extensive wind and rainfall that inevitably influence the migratory behavior of BPH. However, the impact mechanism of temperate cyclones on the migration of BPH remains unclear.【Methods】This study investigated the impact of temperate cyclones on August migration patterns in the region by analyzing light-trap data (June to September during 2004-2019) from 20 monitoring stations in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and temperate cyclone parameters, employing correlation analysis and generalized linear models (GLMs).【Results】The results demonstrated significant effects of August temperate cyclones on BPH migration peaks in the area. The frequency of Jianghuai cyclones showed a significant positive correlation with population abundance (r = 0.684, P < 0.001), whereas the intensity of East China Sea cyclones exhibited a significant negative correlation (r = -0.627, P < 0.001). High-frequency Jianghuai cyclones promoted population growth and northward migration of BPH to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River through the eastern sector's warm temperatures, reduced precipitation, and southerly winds. Conversely, intense East China Sea cyclones hindered migration via the western sector's cool temperatures, heavy rainfall, and easterly winds, resulting in lower population levels.【Conclusion】This study establishes that spatio-temporal characteristics of specific temperate cyclone types (Jianghuai/East China Sea cyclones) significantly modulate BPH migration. These findings not only enhance early warning systems in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River but also provide novel insights into meteorological drivers of migratory insects.

http://hjkcxb.alljournals.net/hjkcxben/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202601004&flag=1

【Aim】Argyrogramma agnata Staudinger is an important migratory pest that infests cruciferous and leguminous crops. Clarifying its seasonal migration patterns and population source characteristics in Sanya, Hainan Province, is of great significance for ensuring the security of local grain and vegetable production.【Methods】From July 2022 to December 2025, we used high-altitude light traps in Sanya City to monitor the migratory dynamics of A. agnata, and applied ovarian dissection together with trajectory simulation to determine the source populations, migration routes, and potential origin regions.【Results】Migration activity of A. agnata in Sanya occurred primarily from March to August, representing 87.5% of the annual trap catch. Males consistently outnumbered females throughout this period. The annual migration could be divided into two distinct phases: the spring phase (March-May) and the summer phase (June-August). The mean ovarian development stage, sexual maturation rate, mating frequency and mating rate of the spring population were significantly lower than those of the summer population, indicating that the spring migratory population was derived from local sources, while the summer population was dominated by immigrant populations from outside regions. Trajectory simulation analysis further demonstrated that the spring population mainly migrated from Sanya, Hainan, to northern Vietnam, whereas the summer immigrant populations primarily originated from Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and other regions.【Conclusion】This study demonstrates that A. agnata in Sanya exhibits a seasonal migration pattern characterized by the alternation of local emigration in spring and immigration of overseas populations in summer. The findings provide a theoretical basis for the regional monitoring, early warning, and control of this pest.

http://hjkcxb.alljournals.net/hjkcxben/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202601005&flag=1

【Aim】The 'two migratory' pests of rice (brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (St?l), white-backed planthopper Sogatella furcifera (Horváth), and rice leafroller Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée)) have long posed a serious threat to the safe production of rice in China. This study aims to clarify the occurrence dynamics and migration patterns of the 'two migratory' rice pests under new circumstances such as global climate change and changes in cropping systems.【Methods】Based on pest monitoring data since 2000, the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of the migration pattern of rice 'two migratory' pests in China was systematically analyzed. 【Results】Nationwide, the cumulative population of planthoppers declined over the study period, with two distinct stages. The initial appearance period of brown planthoppers was delayed in the Yangtze River basin, but remained unchanged elsewhere. The peak period of white-backed planthopper advanced in the Nanling area, north of Nanling area and Yangtze River Valley, whereas no significant shifts were detected in other areas. During the initial northward progression, the mean latitude of the main gathering areas shifted significantly poleward. Zooming to regional scale, significant fluctuations were noticed against the overall declining trend: spring immigration into the Nanling and north of Nanling area showed no decline; instead, the peak period advanced. In contrast, the number of rice planthoppers in the Yangtze Huaihe River area declined on the whole, although the coefficient of variation rose sharply, indicating intensified annual fluctuations in local populations. In Sichuan (Southwest China), the population of white-backed planthopper increased during the spring and summer migration seasons. The field population of the rice leafroller generally showed a declining trend; the initial appearance period was delayed in the Yangtze Huaihe River area and Yunnan Province; the main gathering areas shifted northward in late spring, leading to earlier peak periods in the Nanling area. 【Conclusion】The results of this study can provide theoretical support for the accurate prediction and effective control of rice migratory pests in the context of global warming.

http://hjkcxb.alljournals.net/hjkcxben/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202601006&flag=1

【Aim】This study aims to investigate the influence of quasi-biweekly oscillations on the immigration of the white-backed planthopper (Sogatella furcifera) into southern China, with a focus on the characteristic low-frequency atmospheric circulation fields and their mechanisms during different immigration phases (population peak and trough periods).【Methods】Light-trap data from 20 stations across South China (2011-2016) were analyzed. The Morlet wavelet analysis was employed to extract the dominant low-frequency oscillation period of the immigration population during March-May. Key low-frequency atmospheric circulation elements significantly associated with immigration volume were then identified through correlation analysis, and their phase-dependent influences were examined using phase composite analysis, and the climatological characteristics of low-frequency circulation fields during specific phases were summarized.【Results】The analysis revealed a dominant low-frequency oscillation period of 10~20 days in the immigration volume of white-backed planthopper in South China, consistent with the period of atmospheric quasi-biweekly oscillations. The low-frequency wind and geopotential height fields were identified as the primary circulation backgrounds influencing immigration. A regime shift from southwesterly to northeasterly winds-driven by the strengthening of cyclonic circulation over the western Pacific/Sea of Japan and the weakening of anticyclonic circulation over the South China Sea/Bay of Bengal-was found to suppress immigration from source areas to South China. In contrast, positive low-frequency height anomalies and a northward shift of the subtropical high facilitated immigration.【Conclusion】Therefore, atmospheric quasi-biweekly oscillations dynamically modulate immigration through the configuration and evolution of wind and geopotential height fields, indicating that quasi-biweekly signals, such as the activity phase of zonal wind, can support medium-term forecasting of white-backed planthopper immigration.

【Aim】This study aimed to investigate the community composition, population dynamics, and flight characteristics of airborne insects in the China-Kazakhstan (hereafter referred to as Sino-Kazakh) border region.【Methods】A systematic monitoring study was conducted from June to August in 2023 and 2024 in the Tacheng border area of Xinjiang. The research integrated insect radars, high-altitude light traps and ground light traps. The dominant species were also given special attention.【Results】The results revealed that Coleoptera (55.92%) and Lepidoptera (30.17%) were the dominant taxonomic groups in the airborne insect community, while Ephemeroptera accounted for the lowest proportion (0.03%). The dominant species were identified as Scotogramma trifolii (Hufnagel) and Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner). The flight heights of both species were primarily concentrated between 200 m and 300 m, with their main flight directions being northeast or east-northeast. Specifically, the peak period, nocturnal flight time, and flight speed for S. trifolii were July 10, 2023; 23:00-01:00 (the next day); and 0~6 m/s, respectively. In contrast, for H. armigera, these parameters were August 25, 2024; 22:00-02:00 (the next day); and 14~16 m/s, respectively.【Conclusion】This study further clarifies the community composition, seasonal dynamics, and aerial behavioral characteristics of dominant airborne insect groups along the Sino-Kazakh border. The findings hold significant practical value for utilizing entomological radar in the monitoring, early warning, and regional cooperative management of migratory pests in this border region.
