To investigate the effects of feeding on different maize varieties on the growth, development, and reproduction of Spodoptera frugiperda, and on the parasitism of Microplitis pallidipes to S. frugiperda, effects of feeding on three varieties of fresh maize (Shenketiannuo 99, Shenkenuo 602, Shengketian 811), a common maize variety (Zhengdan 958) and artificial diet on the developmental duration, egg number, hatchability, and adult longevity of S. frugiperda were assessed. The indicators such as parasitism rate, cocoon and bee emergence rates of M. pallidipes to S. frugiperda feeding on different varieties of corn were statistically analyzed. The findings indicated that the number of eggs laid, the adult longevity, and the survival rate and developmental duration of S. frugiperda larvae were significantly influenced by a diet consisting of various corn varieties and artificial diet (P<0.05). Generally, S. frugiperda feeding on fresh corn of 3 varieties exhibited a greater egg-laying capacity, an increased survival rate of larvae, and a reduced development duration. Among them, the adult S. frugiperda that feeding on Shenshennuo 602 had the largest number of eggs (1 420.78), the highest larval survival rate (82.33%), and the shortest larval development period (15.77 days). There were significant differences observed in the parasitism rate and cocoon emergence rate of M. pallidipes to S. frugiperda larvae feeding on different maize varieties and artificial diet (P<0.05). Specifically, the parasitism rate of M. pallidipes to S. frugiperda feeding on common corn (64.18%) was higher than that of three fresh corn varieties (48.78%~54.75%), and the parasitism rate of M. pallidipes to S. frugiperda feeding on artificial diet was the lowest (39.41%). The higher cocoon emergence rate of M. pallidipes was found in the parasitized S. frugiperda feeding on artificial diet and common corn (74.80% and 72.53%), while it was lower in those feeding on fresh corn (48.39%~55.49%). These results indicated S. frugiperda feeding on fresh corn had better growth and reproduction ability. The parasitic effect of M. pallidipes on S. frugiperda feeding on common corn was better than those S. frugiperda larvae feeding on fresh corn. Therefore, when the parasitoid M. pallidipes is used to control S. frugiperda in the fresh corn planting area, the release quantity or release times of the parasitoid should be appropriately increased to ensure the control effect.

In order to evaluate the predatory capabilities of Eocanthecona furcellata on the larvae of the important agricultural pest, Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm) properly, this study examined the influence of individual collaboration on the predation efficacy of E. furcellata. This was achieved by simultaneously increasing the populations of both predators and preying while maintaining a consistent predator-to-prey ratio. The findings revealed that the younger nymphs (2nd and 3rd instar) of E. furcellata were incapable of preying on the 5th instar larvae of S. frugiperda individually. Nevertheless, these younger nymphs exhibited the ability to engage in cooperative hunting. When groups of more than three 2nd instar nymphs and more than one 3rd instar nymphs respectively were able to prey on the 5th instar larvae successfully, indicating a pronounced synergistic effect. And the 4th and 5th instar nymphs, along with female adults of E. furcellata, exhibited strong predatory capabilities, with each capable of preying on the 5th instar larvae of S. frugiperda independently. However, more partners did not yield a significant synergistic enhancement of their predation. These findings provide reference for the predatory abilities across different developmental stages of E. furcellata and their potential applications in agricultural pest management.

In order to study the pathogenic mechanism of Metarhizium rileyi on Spodoptera frugiperda larvae, two strains of M. rileyi MDXZ200803 and SLSY200714 were isolated and identified from the diseased larvae of S. frugiperda in the field. The virulence of M. rileyi under five spore concentrations (1×104~1×108 conidia/mL) to the 3rd and 5th instar larvae of S. frugiperda and the changes of protective enzymes (POD, CAT and SOD) and detoxification enzymes (GST and CarE) in 3rd instar larvae infected by two strains of M. rileyi were determined by the impregnation method. The results showed that the cumulative corrected mortality of the 3rd instar larvae of S. frugiperda was 100% at the concentration of 1×107 conidia/mL and 1×108 conidia/mL after 8 days of infection with the strain MDXZ200803, and the cumulative corrected mortality of the 5th instar larvae did not reach 100%. Eight days after M. rileyi SLSY200714 infected the 3rd instar larvae of S. frugiperda, only the cumulative corrected mortality at the concentration of 1×108 conidia/mL reached 100%, and the cumulative corrected mortality for the 5th instar larvae did not reach 100%. After 3rd instar larvae of S. frugiperda were treated with 1×108 conidia/mL for 36 h, 48 h, 60 h and 72 h, the activities of CAT, SOD and CarE were the highest at 36 h and then decreased gradually, while the activities of POD and GST were the highest at 48 h and then decreased. This study provided a theoretical basis for revealing the pathogenic mechanism of M. rileyi from the perspective of host immune enzyme activity changes, and provides ideas for the biological control against S. frugiperda.

In order to clarify the microscopic process of Metarhizium rileyi strain CDTLJ1 infestation in the Spodoptera frugiperda larvae and to elucidate the pathogenic mechanism of the strain, scanning electron microscope, fluorescence microscope and light microscope were used to observe the process of conidia attachment on the surface of the larvae after inoculation of the 3rd instar larvae with the strain CDTLJ1, germination and penetration, and proliferation in the larvae body cavity. The results showed that the germination rate of conidia of strain CDTLJ1 was 80.36% in strumae surface topography, which was significantly higher than 72.44% in gentle surface topography (P<0.01). Spores could form germ tubes and appressoria after germination, but most of them used germ tubes as infestation structure. Conidia germinated within 8 h after inoculation, with peak penetration into the integument of larvae at 16~24 h. Larvae moulted at 24~32 h after inoculation, and the moulted epidermis was covered with spores adhering to the surface of the protozoan. The earliest appearance of hyphae body observed in the larvae's body cavity was 48 h after inoculation. The insects died after 96 h of inoculation, Hyphae were visible in the electron microscopic field of view as it penetrated the integument and grew outward from the host at 2 h after death. The germination time of strain CDTLJ1 conidia on the isolated epidermis was 16 h, which was later than that on the epidermis of live larvae significantly.
