To clarify the distribution pattern of the suitable habitat of the alien invasive species Solenopsis invicta in China and the impact of agricultural protected areas on its distribution, the study predicted the potential distribution of S. invicta based on the ensemble models, combining with the proportion of agricultural protected areas. The results showed that the prediction results of the ensemble models were reliable, and the TSS and ROC values were about 0.85 and 0.95; Temperature and precipitation were the key environmental variables affecting the distribution of S. invicta; Under the historical conditions, the suitable areas for S. invicta will spread to 28 provinces (cities、autonomous regions) in China. Considering the factor of agricultural protected areas, the level of suitable areas in some regions of Shandong, Yunnan, Beijing, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Liaoning and Heilongjiang Province will be improved.

http://hjkcxb.alljournals.net/hjkcxben/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202206007&flag=1

Red imported fire ant (RIFA, Solenopsis invicta Buren) is one of the most destructive invasive organisms listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and is the insect pest for agricultural, forestry and import plant quarantine in China. Effective and accurate monitoring of RIFAs is particularly important in the prevention and control of RIFAs, and bait-trapping is a powerful measure to monitor RIFAs. Compared with the screening and improvement of bait, the research on trap detector lags behind. Here, the application effects of two monitoring methods (i.e., “plastic bottle+sausage”（PS） and “novel trap+sausage”（TS）) on RIFAs were compared and analyzed. The results showed that plastic bottle with PS treatment had an obvious warming effect after 5 min between 1∶30 and 3∶30 p.m, with a significant decrease in the number of RIFAs, and the proportion of bait that collected RIFAs decreased by 43.6% compared with TS treatment. Additionally, the time consumed by placed or retrieved traps with TS treatment was significantly shorter than that of PS treatment. In the complex wasteland habitat, the more traps were placed, the lower the trap recovery rate with PS treatment was; when the number of traps reached 90, the recovery rate with PS treatment was 92.34%, while that of TS treatment was 98.67%. Based on the above analysis, we suggested that monitoring method-TS had advantages over PS in application effects due to its characteristics of open bait, integration of trap and labeling, and good stability. Monitoring method-TS was suitable for a wider range of applications, and needed to be further improved and applied to the investigation and monitoring of RIFAs in the future.

http://hjkcxb.alljournals.net/hjkcxben/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202206008&flag=1

The little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata Roger) is listed as one of the 100 most harmful invasive species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In January 2022, little fire ants were discovered to invade mainland China for the first time. The development of monitoring technology for little fire ants is of great significance to find out the occurrence and distribution of this invasive ants. In this paper, the trapping effects of ham sausage, peanut butter, peanut oil and honey on the little fire ants were determined, and the number of little fire ants in different habitats was investigated. The trapping effect of ham sausage was the best in the indoor test, followed by peanut butter and peanut oil, and honey was the worst. In the outside test, peanut butter and ham sausage had the best trapping effect, and there was no significant difference in the number of traps placed for 30 minutes and 60 minutes, and the food lures placed at the top of the bottle could attract more worker ants. Morning and afternoon were more suitable for trap testing. Field investigations using peanut butter found that small fire ants were distributed in habitats such as mountainsides, foothills, houses, fields and roadsides. The above results provide a reference for further investigation of the little fire ant epidemic.

In order to obtain the scientific basis for optimal bait formulation, the flavor components of different monitoring baits for red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) were studied. Headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectroscopy was used to analyze the odor fingerprints of different monitoring baits at 60℃, and principal component analysis was used to analyze the differences of flavor substances. A total of 93 signal peaks and 87 volatile compounds were identified. The compounds with high strength peaks in carrier material (CK) included 3 benzenes, 2 alcohols, 3 ketones, 2 esters, 4 aldehydes, 1 furan and 1 alkene. The flavor compositions of JR, ZR and JZ samples were similar, and the compounds with higher intensity peaks included 2 alcohols, 1 acid, 12 aldehydes and 1-8 cineole, etc. 3 alkenes, 10 ketones, 1 benzene, 5 aldehydes, 1 furan, 3 ethers, 7 alcohols and 4 esters in HT were compounds with high strength peaks. Principal component analysis showed that CK, HT and monitoring baits had a long clustering distance, and the three were clustered into a single category, with great differences in flavor components. There were more aldehydes in JR, ZR and JZ bait, and more ketones and alcohols in HT bait. The results of the above mentioned bait flavor composition analysis can provide important information for the development of accurate and efficient special bait for the monitoring of S. invicta.

http://hjkcxb.alljournals.net/hjkcxben/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202206010&flag=1

Red imported fire ant (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta is an important invasive fire ant species, which is similar to taxonomic character of black imported fire ant (BIFA), S. richteri and hybrid imported fire ant (HIFA), S. invicta × S. richteri. It is difficult to distinguish them by their appearance. In order to identify three closely related species of RIFA, BIFA and HIFA, the components and contents of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) from worker, female and male winged forms of the three fire ants were analyzed by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS), principal component analysis, discriminant analysis and cluster analysis. The result indicated that a total of 62 CHCs components were separated from the epidermis of the three species, including monomethyl alkanes, dimethyl alkanes and n-alkane. There were significant interspecific differences in the components and contents of CHCs among three castes of the three species of fire ants. While the CHCs components and contents between two RIFA populations in Guangdong, China and Mississippi, USA were relatively similar. Cluster discriminant functions of different castes of the three species of fire ants were established by principal component analysis and discriminant analysis, which accurately distinguished workers, female and male winged forms of the three fire ants. Therefore, CHCs can be used for taxonomic identification of the three related species of RIFA, BIFA and HIFA. The result would provide a new technical tool for the port quarantine rapid detection and identification of some species of Solenopsis.
