In the view of natural and sexual selection, homosexual behavior represents an evolutionary paradox. The topic on causes and significances of homosexual behavior is an important research issue in evolutionary biology. Here we reviewed the ethology, causes, evolutionary implications and genetic bases of homosexual behavior in insects. Not only were the existed problems analyzed, but research directions were also proposed, which was expected to provide references for the future study. At the same time, we hope that more and more researchers pay attention to the homosexual behavior in insects, focus on it, devote themselves to the great job and make a great contribution to the research area.

The way of courtship behavior is rich, and different species have different courtship behaviors with their specificity. It is meaningful to apply courtship behavior to identify the congener species and biological species. The application of sex pheromone courtship, song courtship, bioluminescent courtship and nuptial gift courtship in classification and identification is reviewed in this paper.

The turnip moth Agrotis segetum Denis & Schiffermüller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an important migratory insect pest of many crops throughout the World. The investigation on its flight capacity is helpful for understanding migratory mechanism of this insect. The flight performances of A. segetum were tested by tethering individuals to computerized flight mills for a 24 h trial period. The results indicated that the laboratory population of 1-d-old moths showed a weak flight capacity, but the 3-d-old moths took the strongest flight ability. The mean flight duration, mean flight distance and mean flight velocity for 3-d-old moths reached 12.16±0.74 h, 48.94±3.40 km and 3.76±0.12 h, respectively. There were no significant differences of flight ability between female and male moths. The mean flight distance and velocity of the virgin moths were significantly higher than that of mated individuals. Both wild populations captured from early-middle and late seasons at Beihuang Island presented similar flight activity, which were significantly weaker than that of the laboratory population. These findings suggested that A. segetum possessed a strong flight capacity, and both age and mating status were the key factors affecting its flight.

It is important to monitor and warn the pest for elucidate the occurrence dynamics and migration pathways of DBM in different places. The dynamics of DBM occurred in Nanjin, Gucheng, Anyang, Dalian, Gongzhuling, Shenyang in spring of 2009 were studied by the field system survey method, the immigration and emigration peak in different places were determined, and the migration pathway was simulated by using the HYSPLIT. Results showed, in different southern regions of our country in spring of 2009, the adult populations of DBM existed the sudden increase and then decrease phenomenon, which was accordance with the population dynamic characteristics of insect migration during the migratory period. The track analyses of the airflow were suggested the adults of DBM migrated from Nanjing to Dalian on May 14 th, from Gucheng to Gongzhuling on May 19 th and from Anyang to Shenyang on May 20th, respectively. The results showed that the population quantity of C.aeruginosa was 1505.13±1184.90. The average population density of C.aeruginosawas 4.79 per square meter. The average survival rate was 0.7605 and immigration rate was 0.5488. The average value of immigration was 741.72. Dispersal distances of C.aeruginosa were between 0-900 cm that mainly concentrated in 100 cm. C.aeruginosamainly dispersed to northeast direction.
This paper aims to explore the mating behaviors and effects of the mating experience and temperature on copulation duration of Calliptamus italicus. Mating behavior of C.italicus was analyzed by field observation and using insect behavior observation instrument and copulation duration was measured under different temperatures (27℃,36℃,42℃). Results showed that mating behavior of C.italicus included both meeting and mating. Meeting behavior included the avoidance, fighting and mating. The fighting behavior occurred when two males met or a male met a pair of mating adults. The avoidance or mating behavior would occur when two females met, a male met a female or a female met a pair of mating adults. Mating behavior of C.italicus included four phases, i.e. males bending abdomen, climbing on females back, genitalia contacting and mating. Mating behavior ofC.italicus lasted 11.25±1.40 min. The copulation duration for virgin females and males(12.88±0.67 min) was significantly longer than thatfor multiple mated females and males(10.47±0.39 min)(P<0.05); The copulation duration for virgin females and multiple mated males(11.00±0.75 min) was not significantly longer than that for virgin males and multiple mated females (11.00±0.75 min)(P>0.05). The copulation duration shortened as temperatures went up. The duration at 27℃ (15.93±2.25 min)was the longest and was significantly longer than at other temperatures (P<0.05). The duration at 42℃ (6.01±0.43 min) was the shortest, but there was not significantly different between 42℃ and 36℃ (7.47±0.52 min) (P>0.05). Results could help us understand the mating behavior and provide a theoretical reference for the integrated management of C.italicus.
